Quote 2-28-11

"Sometimes it is the smallest decisions that change your life forever."
-Keri Russell
In life, there are an infinite amount of endings. Something small, like choosing to go to the store one day, could make you run into you true love. Choosing to smoke one cigarette could get you addicted and die an earlier death from lung cancer. Choosing to send a text message instead of watching the street, and you could get hit by a car. Life is made of small decisions that we make every day. Luck and chance rule our lives. Being in the right place at the right time or vice versa can give a person amazing opportunities or negative consequences.

Human Relation in Architecture 2-25-11

Architecture is designed in some ways to ease human function in, on, and around the building. Architecture also is designed for the pleasure of humans. Buildings are designed to be aesthetically pleasing, so architects must keep that in mind. Buildings must also be designed to efficiently perform the tasks it is being made for.

Frank Lloyd Wright 2-24-11

Frank Lloyd Wright Vs. Gehry Vs. Gaudi
Wright was inspired by nature with geometric shapes, a master of arts and crafts. He had strict shapes; squares, triangles, rectangles, ect. Gehry also worked with nature, but his style was more smooth and (In Mrs. Menefee's words) organic with circles and more modern shapes.

Shakespeare Quote 2-22-11

"Nature hath framed strange fellows in her time."
-William Shakespeare
I believe this quote means that, over time, things that have changed by ways out of man's control. This could mean strange life forms like animals, or strange forces of nature like natural disasters.

How has architecture changed over the last 100 years?
Architecture has changed with the material that have become available to build with. Products are stronger, lighter, more durable, and more efficient. Technology has evolved, so architecture has had to evolve to fit the new technology.

3 types of Architecture!!
Gothic Architecture
I like Gothic architecture because the heavy, intricate designs are, in a way, elegant. It reminds me of the inside of a ballroom that was turned to stone. To me, it reminds me of a dark romance.

Hindu Architecture
I like the architecture because I like the look of the layers in the buildings. The colors are a bit drab, but it is exotic and entrancing. I see a lot of feeling and emotion in the style.

Traditional Japanese Architecture
I like the architecture because it falls under my existing liking for asian architecture. Like pagodas, the arched rooftops are nice to me.

Artist Comparison 2-8-11

Leonardo Da Vinci vs. Jackson Pollock

Da Vinci
1452-1519
Italian paintersculptorarchitectmusicianscientistmathematicianengineerinventoranatomistgeologistcartographerbotanist and writer

I actually don't feel much emotion when I look at Da Vinci's art. It's very realistic which doesn't seem that exciting to me.
Da Vinci uses line to make images of people to make his art, but the lines themselves are not the art

Pollock
1912-1956
American artist
Abstract expressionist

I like the abstractness of Pollock's art. His color choices are appealing to me. He uses a nice balance and his lack of exactness makes it easy for more people to open their minds to see different things.
In his paintings, the lines themselves are the art.

2-7-11

What is Line?
noun.
A continuous mark made on a surface by a moving point

It can define a space, create an outline or pattern, imply movement or texture and allude to mass or volume.

"Everything starts from a dot"
-Wassily Kadinsky

I interpret from this quote that to make anything you have to start somewhere. One point, one dot. The starting place of any art project is one specific place.

Wassily Kadinsky
1866-1944
Kadinsky was a Russian artist and art theorist. He was the first modern abstract painter. In his art theory, he made the connection between art and spiritual belief.

Frank Gehry 2-3-11

Frank Gehry
1929 - present day
Gehry is an architect who is known for thinking outside the box of normal or possible. He falls under the category deconstructivism. This modern architecture has been awarded many times. I really like his work because I love modern architecture with shiny silver exterior and odd different shapes and angles. I like buildings that aren't symmetrical with shapes or rooms sticking out and away.

How is Light used in Art? 2-2-11

How is Light used in Art?
Stained glass was some of the earliest art utilizing light. Artists make tinted glass of different colors and combine then into images. When light shines though, the colors are vibrant and beautiful.
Photography depends on light because to take a photograph, there must be a light source to put the image on the strip. Also, good photography presents shadows which is caused by art.
Neon lighting is the use of neon in an area to make shapes, words or other designs. Neon is bright and attractive; it's an attention grabber.

Chinese Lantern Festival 2-1-11

Chinese Lantern Festival
The Lantern Festival occurs on the fifteenth day of the first month of the lunisolar year. The festival officially ends the Chinese New Year. During the festival, people hang paper lanterns, set off fireworks, and eat dumplings to name a few activities. Some call the Chinese Lantern Festival Chinese Valentine's Day since lover's often celebrate their affection this day. Most legends associated with the festival included putting out lanterns and setting off firecrackers, pretending that the city or village was on fire.
